NSW Parliament endorses quick rebuild for Katoomba RSL

Liberal member of the NSW Parliament Hon. Shayne Mallard MLC has successfully passed a resolution in the NSW Upper House calling on all three levels of government to work together for the speedy rebuild of Katoomba RSL club following the devastating fire on the 24th of February.

Mr Mallard who is a Katoomba resident said the resolution demonstrates the importance parliament places on community institutions like the RSL. 

"This resolution will allow me to assist with any planning or regulatory hurdles that may hamper a speedy rebuild of the Club," Mr Mallard said. 

As a first step Shayne Mallard will inspect the fire damaged club and meet with the RSL Club President along with local ward Councillor Kevin Schreiber. 

"The Minister for Veteran Affairs the Hon David Elliot has asked that I represent him at the inspection and meeting to see what the Berejiklian government can do to assist.” 

Shayne Mallard will inspect the club and meet with the RSL on Tuesday 14 March and report back to the government. 

"Katoomba RSL Club provides vital services to our veterans as well an important social and community hub for the people of Katoomba. Let's all roll our sleeves up and rebuild this iconic club." Mr Mallard concluded. 

The motion passed unanimously by the NSW Parliament reads: 

1227. Mr Mallard to move—

1. That this House notes that:

(a) on 24 February 2017, the Katoomba RSL Club was nearly totally destroyed by a fire that is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault,

(b) no-one was seriously injured thanks to the efforts of staff, management and emergency services,

(c) important irreplaceable local veteran memorabilia was destroyed, and (d) the fire has also impacted upon the Blue Mountains music festival and related regional tourism sector.

2. That this House calls on the Blue Mountains Council, Federal Government and Government along with the RSL Club to work cooperatively and efficiently to support the rapid rebuilding of the RSL and the return of the important community and veteran services that the institution supported.
