AUSTRALIAN FIRST INITIATIVE TO REDUCE RECIDIVISM

  In an Australian first, social impact investment will be used to target parolees with the aim of reducing the rate of reoffending and re-incarceration. Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Corrections David Elliott today announced that the NSW Government will partner with not-for-profit groups Australian Community Support Organisation (ACSO) and arbias, supported by a joint investment from National Australia Bank (NAB) and ACSO. “NSW is leading the way when it comes to Social Impact Investment – and it allows us to address serious challenges facing our community while harnessing the expertise of the not-for-profit sector as well as financial support from private investors,” Ms Berejiklian said. Greyhound Racing to be Shut Down in NSW

NSW will become the first Australian state to shut down greyhound racing after a Special Commission of Inquiry found overwhelming evidence of systemic animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting. Premier Mike Baird and Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Troy Grant announced today that the NSW Government is acting to protect animal welfare as a priority, and is planning for an orderly industry shutdown as of 1 July 2017. Mr Baird and Mr Grant released the report of the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW, which found that between 48,000 and 68,000 greyhounds – or at least half of all greyhounds bred to race – were killed in the past 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive.   Continue reading

NSW MOTORISTS TO BENEFIT FROM CTP REFORMS

The NSW Government today released a plan to overhaul the state’s Compulsory Third Party Motor Accident Insurance Scheme aimed at making it fairer and more affordable for road users. Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said that under the Government’s proposal, defined benefits would be introduced for low severity injuries, with lump sum compensation retained for the most seriously injured. “We have the least affordable motor accident insurance scheme in the country, with Sydney passenger vehicle owners currently paying between $537 and $886 for their Green Slip,” Mr Dominello said.  Continue reading

NSW BUDGET: $12 BILLION FOR METRO RAIL REVOLUTION

Tomorrow’s NSW Budget will commit a massive $6.2 billion towards Sydney Metro City & Southwest and $5.8 billion for Sydney Metro Northwest over the next 4 years, with both stages now fully funded. The Premier Mike Baird, Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance made the announcement as the tunnels for Sydney Metro Northwest were handed over within budget and 10 months early – ready for railway tracks to be installed and the new metro stations built.
